STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Style of Photography
COMMERCIAL + EDITORIAL = TIMELESS NOSTALGIA
My style of photography is a hybrid. I love combining the commercial feel of photographs that would look good on the cover of a magazine with the editorial feel of images that capture the emotion and feel of a moment in time. Everything around me inspires this. In particular, I am always looking for the elements that make a memory feel a certain way. I guess what I am really looking for is the nostalgia as it is happening. Also, I do realize your that family wants shots of you smiling at the camera so I am always sure to include those. I know that they are equally important.
Prompting, not Posing
LOOKING FOR CONNECTION
I am known for capturing the in-between moments and people’s true smiles. Instead of posing, I prefer to give prompts. An example would be to go into a beautiful area such as a park or wedding venue and have them look at me and then on the count of three do something crazy or slightly embarrassing! Even though the idea sounds quite silly, it always results in great photographs of people smiling, laughing and being conveyed as their true selves instead of the old “Sears Portrait Studio posed smile”. For couples, I also love offering prompts to slow things down and get the beautiful romantic shots that show the connection between the two of them. Prompts bring out the natural reactions which are what I love to photograph.
Using Natural Light
ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL AND LIGHTNING FAST
I’ve been trained to shoot both outdoors and indoors and will either use natural light or create my own if needed. The beauty of natural light is the speed in which you can shoot. No need to set up lights, wait for the batteries to recycle between flashes, adjust settings or light stands. As a professional photographer, I love using natural light whenever I can.
Studio Lighting
USING LIGHT FROM STROBES
While I prefer a naturally lit environment I am also ready to produce stunning images no matter what the environment decides to hand us. I especially love using light to create beautiful images at sunset or capturing an amazing photo of a couple as they enjoy their first dance as husband and wife.
